CBS: British Music Entrepreneurs Bring Music Education to Detroit: Behind the Scenes at DIME

As a Detroit artist, I’ve always looked for a place to call home: a place to develop my skills, create, rehearse, and perform. There was no single place in the city that offered all of these things until Detroit Institute of Music Education (DIME) opened its doors this spring.

DIME immediately attracted the attention of the local music community. Founded by British music entrepreneurs Kevin Nixon, Sarah Clayman, and Bruce Dickinson, it’s currently situated at a pop-up location at 1520 Woodward and will soon move into its permanent building this fall at 1265 Griswold in downtown’s Capitol Park neighborhood.

Kevin, Sarah, and …

Hiop in Detroit: Detroit X Detroit 4 – Bigger and Better than Before!

This past weekend the fourth installment of Detroit X Detroit took over the Magic Stick in Detroit. Hits from fifteen Detroit bands or singers were performed by some of the leaders and some of the new comers in Detroit’s current music scene. The night included music by legendary musicians including Madonna and The Supremes and also some local favorites such as Phantasmagoria. This year’s DETXDET was the biggest year yet, with probably the most diverse lineup yet as well. That goes for both the actual performers and the music being covered. There was music from Detroit Punk Rockers The Suicide …

CBS: Keeping Rodriguez’s Legacy Alive at DETROIT by DETROIT IV

Detroit music has always been broken up into eras, and each era has brought us some amazing music. DETROIT by DETROIT is an annual event that lets current Detroit bands cover other Detroit bands…bands that are current – or from some of these past eras.

This year’s DETROIT by DETROIT showcase will take place at the Magic Stick on Saturday, February 22nd, at 8pm. What can you expect? Fifteen local bands will be alternating between two different stages and performing 3-song sets…by other Detroit acts.

This will be my second year participating in this event, and I couldn’t be happier. Last year, I teamed up with my good …

The event started in 2011, as an April Fool’s show, but has now turned into an annual showcase.

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) What started as an “April Fools” show has become an annual tradition celebrating Detroit music — Welcome to the fourth annual DETROIT by DETROIT showcase.

The musical showcase will take over the Magic Stick Feb. 22, showcasing the talent right here in metro Detroit, and proving ‐ once again ‐ why the local music scene is unlike any other.

It started in 2011 with 12 Detroit bands covering 12 other Detroit acts. This year, with the same concept, it will feature more bands than you can count on two hands, switching between two stages.

“It’s a musical thrill ride, with each year bringing new surprises,” promoters …

CBS: Parking Structure With A Twist – Local Filmmakers To Make Documentary about “The Z”

There are a lot of revitalization efforts happening in downtown Detroit to restore the city to its former glory…and I’m loving every bit of it.

Amidst Detroit’s historic landmarks, new construction is occurring, allowing for creative contributions by global artists as we work towards the expansion of the city.

Lately, “The Z” has captured all the buzz – a massive, ten-story, “Z”-shaped parking structure, retail center, and art gallery which recently opened its doors to the public last week. Personally, I believe the most impressive features of this structure are the paint-covered interior walls, showcasing the work of twenty-seven international artists who …

Stevie Soul Stuck in Perpetual State of Beatbox

Stephen Q. Soul, or Stevie Soul as he is known on, used to love to beatbox. That is no longer the case.

According to the nation’s top Neurologist, Dr. Kenneth Atwater, Stevie’s brain can process thoughts in English but can only express these thoughts via beatbox.

“There seems to be a failure of the frontal lobe in the cerebrum to articulate the appropriate words necessary for Mr. Soul to express his thoughts to others,” Dr. Atwater explained. “I don’t understand it, but his beats are sick.”

Stevie Soul has had an extremely difficult time communicating with others due to his condition. He …

4 Insights From Techonomy Detroit (By: Josh Linker)

Earlier this week, I had the honor of speaking at Techonomy Detroit, a major conference in its second annual occurrence here in the Motor City. While the conference content ranged from education to city planning, from public/private realms intersecting, from jobs to technology, there were a few common themes of the day overall. While it’s encouraging to see these traits from any number of people, these attributes are that much more powerful when exhibited by the sold-out, at-capacity crowd that attended. For those of us in Detroit, this message is loud and clear …
